Life On Mission – Daily Devotion – Day 7

What does it look like to ‘Love your neighbour’?  Today’s blog post hopefully gives us some food for thought.

‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. ‘

Matt. 7:12

‘One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’ ‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.’ ‘Well said, teacher,’ the man replied. ‘You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. ‘

Mark 12:28-32

What is being said?

Simply put, if we love God with everything we have we will love others like He does.  Whilst reading today’s devotional plan the writer references a conference he went to in the US.

While at that conference, the speaker asked everyone to draw a grid with 9 equally sized boxes 3 across and 3 down. He then asked to write your name in the center box, to mark your home. He then asked to fill in the other boxes with the names of your neighbours; the people that lived all around you. It was worrying and embarrassing as it hard to come up with all those names! In one box people wrote, “guy with electric lawnmower.” He then asked everyone to fill in any details of those individuals. Everyone started to hide in their seats just a little more. The harsh reality was that few really knew who their neighbours were and any details about them.

Unfortunately, many of us have missed the chance to truly know our neighbours.  Over the last year we have had the privilege of getting to know our neighbours.  We have built a relationship with them and have been able to love on them. Interestingly enough they have been such a blessing to us too.

The exercise that was explained above would be a great place to start, if we start to show a genuine interest in our neighbours lives we can position ourselves to love them where they are at.

I pray today that we make the effort to get to know our neighbours.  Lord give us your heart for these people you have positioned us to live in community with.
